The Murray Basin Rail Project is preparing for the completion of stage two and the return of freight trains to the Mildura and Ararat to Maryborough lines from January 2018. Testing and driver training will occur on these lines prior to the full resumption of freight services.

Following the completion of stage two, the project team will start planning and early works for stages three and four of the project scheduled to begin concurrently in March 2018.

The scope of the project is to upgrade and convert 1,055 kilometres of track to standard gauge. This will provide better rail freight services, improve freight access to our major ports and improve road safety by reducing 20,000 truck trips each year.
